Why I Became A Professional Coach Focused On Branding

(Yes, that’s right. We should all see ourselves as superheroes.)

People always ask me why I decide to become a professional coach and, even more curiously, focus on building brands. I could give you the easy and quick answer, tie it to my background, years of work experience, and wrap up with all the unique brands I’ve had the chance to work for in the past. But instead of the fluff, let’s get real.

Being a Business Owner is Hard Work, and Rewarding

Over the last 20 years of my professional career, I have launched four businesses. Unfortunately, the first one was a disaster. I was in my early 20’s and thought that because I had a 9-5 as a public relations manager, I could do the same as a side hustle. Boy, I was wrong. I quickly realized that the business I worked for created an infrastructure where I didn’t have to worry about overhead, acquiring clients, and managing rates, they did the heavy lifting, and I stood on their brand. So, D.A. Spann Communications died a slow death.

Several years later, I dipped my feet back into the entrepreneurial pond when I took my passion and creativity as a photographer and launched DeShelia Spann Photography. To date, this has been my longest-standing business venture and one I’m incredibly proud to see grow and evolve. At the time, I worked in advertising, and it exposed me to some of the best creative minds around who helped me hone my photographic skills. But I quickly realized that it takes more than talent to build and grow a business. You need a strong brand presence, a compelling marketing strategy, and a roadmap to create demand for your products and services.

Like many of you, I realized that having a great idea and being innovative is one part of a giant puzzle when building a business. First, you need to understand how a business works, its ability to be profitable - and most importantly, who’s it for and how do you let them know you have something they want.

Brand and Marketing is My Secret Sauce

When I started digging into the formula for helping my businesses grow and expand, I realized that once I understood the fundamentals of running a business, I had to incorporate branding and marketing. Easy right, I do this for a living and at some of the world’s best brands. Nah, not as easy as you might think. With all the expertise under my belt, I had to learn how to get out of my head and think about building my brand the same way I’ve helped Fortune 500 companies make it there - just with a different budget and more at stake - my financial growth.

So, I created a formula grounded in the areas of branding that were my sweet spots. From brand messaging to audience segmentation and social marketing, my secret sauce helped me perfect my business presence, and you become a benefactor of formula.

I Love an Underdog Story

Here’s a little secret about me, I love boxing, and I’m a massive fan of rooting for the underdog and seeing them win. I’m the same way as seeing small business owners, career professionals, and entrepreneurs succeed in building, growing, and expanding. When others count you out and say you can’t do it, I’m the one rolling up my sleeves and showing you how to get it done. Often, it’s not that you can’t. It’s making sure you have the knowledge, tools, and resources to make it happen. And that you are setting clear, measurable goals that will help you drive the impact you desire.

I became a coach because I love helping people move past challenges to see their goals fulfilled. Often, all it takes is the right coaching to uncover what’s holding you back and what’s needed to move you forward. I’m here to help you build a brand that is authentically you, grounded in what makes you stand out, attracts the right audience, and creates a path to success.

I use the lessons learned in building my businesses to help clients, much like you succeed. I know what it’s like to have a passion for doing something life-changing, creative, and exciting, wanting to share your talents with the world. And I know what it feels like when you fail because you didn’t have the correct information to build on that dream. Being a brand coach allows me the chance to see people like you win. Whether it’s a dream of owning your own business, wanting to build your brand as an expert in your industry, or expanding the business foundation that you have already created - seeing you win makes me happy. And that’s why I do what I do, so that “YOU” have the proper marketing and branding tools to succeed at what you set out to do.
